Neurogeneration, biomimetic vaccines


Biological designs may not seem very optimized at first glance, but it has been discovered that they are highly resilient and adaptable to new situations. The brain is one of the structures most susceptible to damage due to its enormous complexity as well as the path that evolution has chosen for its development.

Even so, there are processes and “communication channels” at a genomic level that can be used to protect it, stimulating its neuroprotective capacity. Bionure has followed this biomimetic approach to find an active principle capable of activating the response of the organism and making the axons of the neurons -the ones responsible for the conduction of the nerve impulses- to stop their deterioration and to regenerate their protective pod of myelin until it returns to its normal state.

This discovery will lead to a new generation of drugs that will allow treating Multiple sclerosis and Optic Neuropathies with results that are far superior to those that are possible to obtain with current means.

Biomimetic vaccines

The tardigrades are tiny arthropods that can live in extreme environmental situations, either at the top of a mountain, at the bottom of the sea, or at temperatures that can go up from 1000 ° C to the absolute zero (−273.15 °C). Most surprising, however, is their ability to dry out and “revive” afterward. When denied water, they “dry out” to protect its chemical machinery (DNA, RNA, and proteins) through a process called anhydrobiosis. When they come in contact with water again, they “revive” and abandon this process.

Almost half of the vaccines produced get damaged because the cycle of cooling breaks off during transportation or treatment. With biomimetics, we are able to take note from the tardigrades in order to solve this. Biomatrica, a company from San Diego (United States), adjusted the tardigrades process so vaccines do not require refrigeration anymore, and instead remain “asleep” waiting for water to be “reanimated”.

The Nova Laboratories, in Leicester (United Kingdom), have also used this natural system as inspiration to create a sugar coating that surrounds the vaccine and protects it during six months without losing its effectiveness.
